How is the Lehigh Valley Impacted
Step 1

Children from low-income homes who don’t read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade are 13 times more likely to drop out of high school.

Step 2

For every five years a student goes without quality education programs during the summer months, the equivalent of one year of school hours is lost.

Step 3

By age 3, children in low income households hear on average up to 30 million fewer words than their middle income peers.

Step 4

Children exposed to 5 or more traumatic experiences in the first three years of life face a 76% likelihood of having one or more delays in their language, emotional, or brain development.

of fourth grade students entered the classroom reading below grade level.
Final Step

We want to change that.

The success of Lehigh Valley Reads will be achieved by integrating all sectors of our community through a common message, mutually beneficial activities and a genuine interest in better supporting our youth and families inside and outside of the school classroom. This unified effort will move our Greater Lehigh Valley from 65% of third graders reading well to 100% by 2025!
